Mikah + Matt | A Wedding at The Atrium on Tenth
These two were destined to meet and get married. Matt came from Australia to attend Columbia College, where he took his academic classes and played basketball for the college. Mikah, a Missouri resident, attended Columbia College and played volleyball. However, the two would not meet until they were graduated and working for the athletic department at the college, where they eventually dated and got engaged.
Mikah and Matt quickly began their wedding planning, and they knew they wanted a venue that would allow them to host both their ceremony and reception. It was all about convenience! The two toured The Atrium on Tenth, a large, industrial-styled wedding venue located in downtown Columbia, Missouri, and booked it for their wedding.
We asked Mikah, “Why did you decide to hire a planner?”
This wedding had to be the most chill wedding of the year. Mikah and Matt elected to have one bridesmaid, who was Mikah’s sister, and one groomsman, who was Matt’s best friend (fun fact - he is also from Australia but the two didn’t meet until attending college in the states. Crazy!!). This allowed the group to start getting ready later in the morning due to not having early wake-up calls for hair and makeup. Mikah and her sister got ready at The Atrium, and they used the venue’s brand new upstairs suite; in fact, Mikah was the first bride to use this new space. While the ladies got ready upstairs, Matt arrived to get dressed downstairs at The Atrium.
While everyone got ready for the day, the vendor team worked hard to setup the ceremony and reception spaces. Sugarberry Blooms provided gorgeous blooms for the event, including petite floral arrangements and flowers styled inside cloches. The palette was warm and inviting for this amazing October wedding. Melissa Shelton Photography worked to photograph all of the details including the bride’s modern wedding gown and gloves.
Mikah exchanged a first look with her father before moving into bridal portraits. Does she not look like she just popped out of a magazine? So gorgeous! Matt also did a first look with his mother; I love the photos from their first look; there is so much energy and so much love between Matt and his mom. From there, Mikah and Matt had their first look in the lower atrium followed by a gift exchange. Of course, Mikah and Matt had to take some photos with their sweet pup, Chuck, who was named after the popular Chuck Bass from the TV show, “Gossip Girl.”
The rest of the afternoon was spent taking portraits around the property, and the couple was joined by their Matron of Honor and Best Man. I secured time for them to take photos at Pressed, a local downtown bar, which provided an awesome editorial backdrop for additional portraits.
Before we knew it, it was time to get everyone lined up for the ceremony. Mikah’s favorite uncle officiated the ceremony, and he provided such a tasteful, personalized service. The couple exchanged personal vows, and boy were they hilarious. The two obviously had a lot of inside jokes between the two of them. I believe that both of their vows mentioned something about cleaning up crumbs. Before we knew it, the couple kissed as husband and wife. The newlyweds then greeted all of their guests to cocktail hour, which gave every guest an opportunity to say hello and congratulations.
All photos were taken prior to the ceremony, including family photos, so Mikah and Matt enjoyed cocktail hour with their friends and loved ones. While guests mingled, our team supported the Atrium staff with a quick room flip from ceremony to reception. We lit candles and got everything ready for the grand entrance. Mikah and Matt opted out of doing a sweetheart table or even a head table; instead, the couple elected to sit with their families. They also chose a unique reception layout, having guests sit at long, family-style tables. We loved this! Also, one of our favorite little details was that the couple wrote special notes for every single guest; that’s right, no templated note. Everything was custom and special to each individual guest. Talk about detailed and thoughtful!
Once the couple made their entrance into the reception, they immediately cut their wedding cake and had their first dance. This was such a lively first dance as the couple chose to dance to “No One” by Alicia Keys. You can definitely catch Mikah serenading Matt in some of their photos. Dinner service began with a lovely meal provided by Catering by Design. As guests finished dinner, they found their way to an amazing dessert bar, which included cookies, tartlets, and cheesecake bites. Everything was so good! The couple was honored with speeches from the Best Man, Matron of Honor, Father of the Bride, and Father of the Groom. Apparently, Mikah is known for her impression of Cher, so she grabbed the mic from her sister and gave us all a little taste. She was pretty spot on.
The couple finished off the evening’s formalities with special dances with their families before the dance floor opened to the sounds of the amazing DJ, Joe Northern.
We provided Event Management services, which included a variety of planning meetings, timeline development, a venue walkthrough, assistance with the layout, confirming final details with vendors, facilitating the rehearsal, managing their wedding day, and so much more.
