Colorful 90's Lisa Frank Wedding Inspiration

Our colorful 90’s Lisa Frank wedding inspiration shoot was hosted at Pretty Little Things, a vintage rental and styling company based outside of Columbia, Missouri. Their all-white showroom provided the perfect setting for a photo shoot designed to focus on the colors, patterns, and fun details.

When you think of Lisa Frank, you probably have rainbow visions from elementary school; your memories include having folders, pencils, stickers, and other essential cool-girl school supplies that were filled with animal and alien motifs that could brighten anyone’s day. Lisa Frank is an iconic designer from the late 80s and early 90s, and we wanted to celebrate and capture the essence of Lisa Frank. We decided to incorporate many elements of the Lisa Frank brand and other vintage elements to tell our story. We would describe our styled shoot as: anti-stuffy, colorful, cool, independent. We sought to appeal to those desiring a wedding that feels unique to them and inspired by who they are as a person versus what is trendy or presently popular.

With the goal of capturing the essence of Lisa Frank, our design started with selecting a colorful, spunky palette. The team felt inspired by a Lisa Frank drawing of a leopard, which led us to pull the colors yellow, purple, and pink. We not only took the color inspiration from the leopard drawing, but we also incorporated leopard print details throughout our entire design. We also wove in plenty of glitter and iridescent elements, another homage to the Lisa Frank style of art.

As with any styled shoot, we start to discuss other elements, vendors, and more. We continued to circle back to our “why” behind the shoot and the goal of capturing our vision of a “Lisa Frank” girl. Our conversation quickly turned into, “What would a Lisa Frank girl look like, act like, and dress like” on her wedding day. This conversation led us to style a casual lounge area, where we envisioned a bride getting ready on her wedding day in lieu of a table setting. This lounge area included leopard print cookies, colorful popcorn, and a bottle of bubbly champagne.

We had a custom gown and robe designed for our bridal model as it felt very appropriate for an anti-stuffy, cool bride. The cheerfully pink two-piece gown became complete with the addition of a “leopard-looking” lace overlay for the sleeves and bodice.

Sugarberry Blooms wanted to design a “wow” piece, which led their team to design a stunning color-blocked hanging installation. This piece could easily translate to a piece for a ceremony or even hung above a head table. Or, in our case, installed above a cozy lounge area for amazing photo opportunities.

If you’re anything like the vendor team, you’ve spent countless hours scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest and have found yourself saying, “This doesn’t look like me.” Consider sitting back to reflect on what things around you inspire you, what gets you excited. For us, it was Lisa Frank. It brought back visions of growing up carefree and wildly independent. It brought back visions of spending hours on the phone with your best friend, chatting about the latest fashions, music, and more. It got us excited. Our hope is that real couples can seek unexpected places to draw inspiration.

While the color palette, theme, and elements might not translate for your particular wedding, our ultimate goal is to think big, to think outside the traditional box of wedding theme and design. There are many ways to put a unique spin on your celebration: a vibrant color palette, surprising patterns, custom attire, captivating floral designs, and more. Additionally, we would encourage couples to seek out vendors that fit with their values and find ones that they can trust to take a wild idea and make it into a reality.

We’re very excited that Bespoke Bride, a blog that exists to “inspire couples to design weddings that are creative, crafty, and full of character",” loved this shoot so much that they published it on their own blog. Check out their post by clicking the link here.

Terra Nickelson of Plan it Terra

Hey, I’m Terra!

Born and raised in Missouri, I’m a grateful wife and dog mom to my rescue pups, Hildi & Lola. I’m a true believer in the pursuit of bold dreams, learning from mistakes, and staying curious.

I'm a girl that lives in her Chacos during the summer, and I'm typically always wearing lipstick. Yes, red is my preference! When I'm not helping engaged couples plan weddings, you'll find me on stage teaching Jazzercise classes. Needless to say, creating engaging experiences that leave people feeling good afterwards is my passion. Seriously!

I’ve created this blog and my wedding packages to empower you to plan an awesome wedding day and put all of the stress and obligations straight into the dumpster! Now that sounds like a party.
