Madalyn + Melvin | A Late Summer Outdoor Wedding at Sorenson Estate
Madalyn and Melvin got engaged while on a destination trip to Mexico. This trip was for a friend’s birthday, but Melvin made sure to get things prepared to ask for Madalyn’s hand in marriage. He talked Madalyn to join him down at the beach for sunrise photos, and that is when he popped the question!
Madalyn and Melvin decided that Sorenson Estate, a historic property that is part of the University of Missouri school system, would be the perfect setting for their wedding. Madalyn said that they chose Sorenson Estate because it was small but still had plenty of space. Additionally, it offered an outdoor setting while maintaining a certain level of charm and sophistication. The couple exchanged their vows in front of their friends and family outside underneath a large tree. The reception followed underneath a white tent which was located on the estate’s back lawn.

Before the actual wedding day, our team helped setup the ceremony and reception at Sorenson Estate. Our crew set out tables and chairs and organized all of the decor in order to make things easier to finish on Saturday. When the wedding day arrived, our team helped with setting up linens, table settings, rentals, and more. Madalyn and Melvin selected a classic color palette of black, white, and gold with pops of green, which was pulled in by the floral arrangements.
The day began with Madalyn and her bridesmaids getting ready inside the large estate. The upstairs bedrooms provided plenty of room and space to spread out to get ready and of course munch on some goodies! Later in the morning, the men joined everyone to get ready, utilizing a separate bedroom upstairs. Madalyn looked just like a modern day Marilyn Monroe with her classic strapless Mikado ballgown. We love that she pulled the look together with a chic, low bun, statement stud earrings, and elbow-length gloves. The getting ready photos of her with her sister are just stunning.
Once dressed, Madalyn and Melvin had their First Look outside on the front lawn of Sorenson Estate. Melvin looked sharp with his all-black suit and white boutonniere. After a few portraits together, the entire bridal party joined the duo for some pre-ceremony photos. An early ceremony time meant that we had to wrap up photos fairly soon so that everyone had time to rest before the ceremony began. During this downtime, the photo/video team, Mike & Mols, went around snapping photos of the ceremony and reception spaces. They did such a great job capturing this classically-designed wedding.
It was time to get everyone lined up, and down the aisle everyone went, our team cueing each person. The couple had seasoned pros in their wedding party, including past clients of Plan it Terra! It was so fun getting to celebrate with some of our former clients. They knew the drill. The couple asked one of their groomsmen to also be their officiant, and he knocked it out of the park! The ceremony was thoughtful and full of love. Seriously, ceremonies are an all-time favorite moment for our team! After the ceremony, the couple took family photos and then took some time to take just married photos before their grand entrance into the reception. While photos happened, guests made their way to the back lawn to enjoy appetizers and cocktails. The black and white lounge set provided by Pretty Little Things was a perfect space for guests to relax as they enjoyed the amazing September weather.
The energy was high for the reception; the couple hired Dawson from High Class DJs, and he brought the energy! Before announcing the couple into the reception, Dawson requested that everyone stand up, grab their black napkins, and wave them in the air to really bring on the excitement. It was quite the grand entrance! Once the couple made their entrance into the reception, they immediately took to the dance floor for their first dance as husband and wife. They chose the timeless song “Stand By Me.” Later in the reception, the couple were honored with a few speeches and danced with some of their loved ones. Of course, they took time cut a delicious wedding cake for two. The rest of the evening was filled with plenty of laughter and lots of dancing.
