Heidi + Mike | An Art Deco Inspired Wedding at The Atrium on Tenth
Heidi and Mike are two busy professionals in the Columbia area. At the time of their engagement, Heidi was a teacher and Mike worked in the financial field. The two met each other through a dating app, so it was only fit to get married in the same place they met, worked, and lived. While Heidi and Mike had a great support team to help them, Heidi knew that they needed to hire a planner. Here’s what she had to say about hiring a planner, “We wanted to stay focused on each other and being in the moment. We understood that tthe expertise and ideas of others can only help us live out the vision we have for our wedding. With our careers and others aspects that keep life busy, we were excited to team up with Terra!”
Heidi and Mike exchanged their vows this past July at First Baptist Church, which is located across the street from Stephens College. An art-deco inspired reception followed the celebration at The Atrium on Tenth, an industrial wedding venue located in the heart of downtown Columbia.
We asked Heidi, “WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE TO WORK WITH PLAN IT TERRA? WHY DID THAT MATTER TO YOU?”
Heidi and Mike got ready for the day at The Broadway Hotel, which provided a fantastic backdrop for several portraits. After getting ready, the bride did a first look with the groomsmen. Of course, the groom did a first look with the bridesmaids. The bride and groom opted to not see each other prior to the ceremony, so the early afternoon was spent separately taking photos with their wedding day attendants.
Prior to the start of the ceremony, the couple read letters to each other outside the front doors of the church. It was a sweet way to prepare for the ceremony itself.
This warm, sunny July day was perfect for an indoor wedding ceremony at First Baptist Church. Mike’s reaction to seeing Heidi for the very first time was so sweet; Mike was incredibly excited; his jaw nearly dropping to the floor when he saw her walk down the aisle with her dad. The ceremony itself was deeply personal as the bride’s mother recited a reading from “Winnie the Pooh.” As part of Mike’s Korean heritage, the couple had a “presentation of the wild goose.” During this exchange the bride and groom presented their famiies with wooden ducks, which is meant to symbolize the couple’s commitment to their new spouse.
After the ceremony, the couple took family photos, complete bridal party photos, and portraits around the exterior of First Baptist Church. This allowed guests to transition down the road to the reception at The Atrium. The creative team did a fabulous job of stying a reception fully inspired by art-deco. Pretty Little Things provided interesting geometric centerpieces, which were perfectly accented by white blooms from Kent’s Floral Gallery. We loved the navy linens and peacock blue linens, too.
After some beautiful portraits in downtown Columbia, the couple joined their guests for the reception. After the couple was announced, the two exchanged their first dance as husband and wife to the song, “The Bones.” During dinner, the couple played a game with their guests where they ran around to every guest table to get a photo with each table. It was such a great way to document everyone attending the reception. Later in the evening, everyone enjoyed thoughtful speeches, cupcake decorating in lieu of cake cutting, and some special dances with loved ones. To finish off the evening, the couple opted for a sparkler exit. It was such a delightful way to end the day of celebrating.

Born and raised in Missouri, I’m a grateful wife and dog mom to my rescue pups, Hildi & Lola. I’m a true believer in the pursuit of bold dreams, learning from mistakes, and staying curious.
I'm a girl that lives in her Chacos during the summer, and I'm typically always wearing lipstick. Yes, red is my preference! When I'm not helping engaged couples plan weddings, you'll find me on stage teaching Jazzercise classes. Needless to say, creating engaging experiences that leave people feeling good afterwards is my passion. Seriously!
I’ve created this blog and my wedding packages to empower you to plan an awesome wedding day and put all of the stress and obligations straight into the dumpster! Now that sounds like a party.
